I listen …. scouts on patrol The Canton system…. It loses control Watching as the current rips I blend opium with wooden ships … all night long, all night long All of my time in the merchant trade Cargo holds the emperor forbade Drifting forwards in the Chinese sea My heart blackened by the red poppy Hey-Ho Ha-Ho ropes tied fast and the smugglers row All their tiny boats back to China’s shores With all of the drugs in the tiny ship stores Fool I’m certain… in all of this life I draw my curtain… Hold close my knife Watching as the current rips I blend opium with wooden ships … all night long, all night long Once in a while I’m saved by grace Tanka women come and kiss and my face Moored on hulks by Lintin Island Paid in silver that shines like the sun Hey-Ho Ha-Ho ropes tied fast and the smugglers row All their tiny boats back to China’s shores With all of the drugs in the tiny ship stores The first captain… wouldn’t listen Lost his right hand …. in Chinese prison Watching as the current rips I blend opium with wooden ships … all night long, all night long … all night long, all night long

Don’t trade your light for one’s life Don’t hold the wrong end of your knife It’s always summer… it’s always winter It’s always someplace deep inside Chorus: Oh, get beside the moon Oh, sleepy hollow muse Oh, sing me a folk tune Oh, sleepy hollow muse… Oh, Laurel Highland blues One eye is open for the road One eye is down and all but closed It’s always 1 AM…. it’s always 2 AM It’s always burned out in the snow Chorus What aches your heart will make you sing Sometimes it don’t mean a thing Into the darkness, into the brightness Into the conscience of your being Chorus

When the sky runs out of things left to show you And it crosses the horizon and your mind Like an old friend you’d like to call But you never pick up the phone And you wonder why your time slips unknown When the marshal holds his hat to his chest And the marching feets come to a rest Like an old fool who stood up to fast And went and knocked his head And you wonder why you’re always saluting the dead When an orphan knows he’s one of a twin And he goes out later in life on a whim Like a feeling we have deep inside That you just couldn’t seem to shake And you wonder why your whole life is really at stake When you’re tired of feeding logs into the fire And your patience has run out of desire Like an old friend who stopped to say That you fell off the edge of the Earth And you wonder why no one has called off the search

White Room 05:13
In the dim light of the room White walls and white ceiling Red kisses and red roses bloom Down inside a good feeling All in the white room El quarto blanco Dreamed I was running from two Boys on a hill chasing deer I jumped in the air and away I flew My wooden wings just appear

Laika 05:13
Your fame caught the world by surprise, a satellite Pioneer on a one way mission, gone fishin’ Everyone thought you’d return alive, by moonlight Stray dog from the streets of Moscow In ’57, they broke the heavens In ’58, we charged the gate In ’59, they took it as a sign And Luna 2 crashed on the surface of the moon The first one to orbit the Earth, a lunar birth How many hours did you wait, a sad fate All the letters to cheer you on, for rocket launch Burned up in the atmosphere, in half a year In ’61, Yuri took the first run In ’62, John Glenn made the orbit news In ’63, Valentina was first lady But none of them carried the weight Of the universe and fate But Laika in outer space

Forest brown and black eyelids Metal upon metal and indoor kids The skies are grey and all around The trees have turned themselves upside down Blossoms bloom now under ground The trees have turned themselves upside down The trees have turned themselves upside down No one listens and no one calls…. It’s like we’re not even here at all It’s not like we’re even here at all Like leaves from the fall The trees have turned themselves upside down The trees have turned themselves upside down Wax on my wings when the sun came out I’m not even sure why it is I doubt I’m not even sure that there is no doubt Then winter comes about

In between my fingertips Unwanted foe, the light switch Confused by my silver screen If you know what I mean Human ties, it knots the ends The darker side, the gate defends Swollen and hurting, truths I am skirting All the negatives they reflect a dark hue Hold me up to the light and I’ll see you Oh essence behave and be true Hold me up to the light and I’ll see you Pour it down the pouring rain The window sits, the inner pain The tasks that are upon me They weigh like the sea In my hands the restless lens It sees my fears, the gate defends All the negatives they reflect a dark hue Hold me up to the light and I’ll see you Oh essence behave and be true Hold me up to the light and I’ll see you

Congratulations are in order You found a way out Down at the information center A hand-me-down, the lost and found What comes around goes around Life is never what it seems Down at the bottom of the river of dreams Your shadow is down there and it’s lying still Change is always the most difficult pill How many ways can you describe one vision? All the colors in the world can’t find an easy decision Last time I saw you it was round the corner dive And we must have smiled at the sound And had a good time, with a twist of lime With no reasons and no rhyme Life is never what it seems Down at the bottom of the river of dreams Your shadow is down there and it’s lying still Change is always the most difficult pill Life is never what it seems Down at the bottom of the river of dreams Your shadow is down there and it’s lying still Change is always the most difficult pill Change is always the hard way uphill Change is always out of time left to kill Change is always the most difficult pill

Oh I never lost a game like I did once after school All of the others went home late and I stayed playin' on with you Well, life is a jest and you know the rest, but I had to play it cool Way after dark and the evening lark said his goodnight too Man on the moon spoke too soon, I was down 3 games to 4 I got nervous and took a risk and planted one on your front door Chorus You make 3 and I make 2 then we make love all night You say goodbye when the sun’s comin’ up On the basketball all right Later on the next day when I asked you out again You said you could never see someone who lost 3 out of 7 Aw....

Keep 03:18
I'm gonna find her walking thru my door But in a way the pain can make me soar Above the clouds, so way up high If and only I could die But then out on the home stretch The pain starts to sink and I begin to retch Oh what I wouldn't do To keep you and keep from turning blue To keep you and keep from turning blue To keep you... and keep from turning blue How hard it is to love someone You gotta pave the way for things undone Make mistakes and sell it short The pain backs up and strikes a chord The pain backs up and strikes a chord Yeah... strike a chord! Oh what I wouldn't do To keep you and keep from turning blue To keep you and keep from turning blue To keep you... and keep from turning blue To keep you and keep from turning blue (X4) To keep you... and keep from turning blue

Oh send me a word Your words send me away I picked up the verse And had nothing else for me to say I hold out my heart I hold out my hand I hold out my neck They send the Riverman Can’t do it alone Once in a blue moon you might be surprised And all the stars align and love’s in your eyes Then fate hits quick just like it always does But I don’t mind the easy way cuz All I’m telling you, all I’m trying to say Is I’m sorry for the thing I did today Out of the frying pan and into the fire I can’t help being called an unretentive liar I hold out my heart I hold out my hand I hold out my neck They send the Riverman Can’t do it alone

Adrift 02:35

about

About: This album was conceived in early 2017 without a defined direction. It began in fits and starts and then with long periods of nothing in between, finally ending with a cymbals crash on February 11, 2021. On a personal level, there was a great deal of soul searching in trying to complete it
Should I bother? Should I let it drift into a lost consciousness never to be heard by anyone but me on my demos?
I definitely considered it...
But I loved the songs and wanted to let it be heard -every single one- culminating with what I feel is the best keyboard counter melody song I ever wrote in Adrift. To me that song encapsulates what is going on now. Not just in the year of a pandemic, but in a trailing off into the musical wasteland as the digital age grows more and more dominant.

Songs/Recording: beginning with the live tracking of Opium and Keep in March of 2017, and then almost a year later in early 2018 with You Wonder Why, White Room, M.D.Pill, and Basketball... and then I lost track of what happened next... the time: it flies by when you let it.
The rest of the songs were tracked with me solo by Bruce Siekmann at the controls in his Amoeba studio, then adding Andrew Amey on drums in the studio a little later on, and slowly built up track by track later on from Dave, Mike and more from myself.
I had planned to finish and release in the spring of 2020 but the coronavirus was having none of it. So I waited and waited... until I could wait no more. Later in the fall of 2020 I got the help of my talented bandmates to record at their own houses then Bruce and I started putting it all together from everyone in their bubble. I also received a huge helping hand from some great musician friends: Billy Whalen, Marie Chelius, Brad and Andria Hinton, Todd Notobartolo, Cory Heller, Mike Lavdanski, and Andy Januzak. Their contributions can't be understated, the songs on the album were fully blossomed with their help.

I feel its the great white whale I have had the fortune of surviving to tell the tale. It is here for you, please listen to it.
It speaks to me, I hope it does for you as well.
